More than an estimated 100 million iPhones are being used in the United States, according to new data shared by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners [PDF]. At the end of the September 2015 quarter, more than 101 million iPhones were in use, and two-thirds of those iPhones were newer iPhones that have been released in 2014 and 2015.

An estimated 58 million of the 101 million iPhones in use were the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, while four million were iPhone 6s and 6s Plus models. The iPhone 6, 6s, 6 Plus, and 6s Plus are the four iPhones that have larger 4.7 and 5.5 inch screens, and the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 appears to be the most popular model. CIRP's data was gathered in September, shortly after the iPhone 6s launch. iPhone 6s and 6s Plus numbers are likely much higher now.

'The analysis shows the continued strength of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, now one year old,' said Mike Levin, Partner and Co-Founder of CIRP. 'We estimate a combined 60 million of these flagship phones sold in the US from the September 2014 launch through September 30, 2015. For comparison, the iPhone 5S sold about 28 million in the same period in 2013-2014. With only a weekend of availability in the quarter, we estimate 4 million of the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus sold in the US.'CIRP's data suggests that while the larger-screened iPhones make up a large chunk of the iPhones in use in the United States, iPhone adoption is slowing as the U.S. market matures. For the past eight quarters, the iPhone installed base grew an estimated average of eight percent, but the installed base grew four percent in the September 2015 quarter and six percent in the September 2014 quarter. Growth numbers were as high as 17 percent in the December 2013 quarter following the launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c.

As the U.S. market becomes saturated with smartphone owners, Apple has increasingly focused its attention on luring customers from Android and other competing platforms. Apple has introduced a new 'Move to iOS' Android app, an Android-switching microsite, and a trade-in program for Android users looking to switch to an iPhone.

Apple's efforts have been successful, and in October, Apple CEO Tim Cook said Apple saw the highest rate of Android switchers it had ever measured in the fourth quarter of 2015. 30 percent of customers who were upgrading from an existing smartphone to an iPhone were former Android users.

Here’s the deal. The UK government is trying to pass legislation that
will prevent anyone from using strong encryption. What it means is “any
encryption we can’t break is banned”. So Apple AAPL +0.82%, which has great security and makes it quite clear that it doesn’t want to see users data, will have to make a decision.

The options for Apple and WhatsApp, Facebook FB -0.98%, Snapchat and any other service that encrypts user chats will be the following:

Let the UK government in through a back door

Do not use encryption for messaging

Do not allow UK citizens access to your product or service.

To be quite clear, Apple can happily manage without the UK and barely notice a dent in its profits. Losing Europe
would hurt, but the UK alone it could quite easily deal with. Europe,
it seems, isn’t so interested in spying on its citizens. On the other
hand, I suspect losing Apple would damage the UK economy quite a bit,
Apple employs a lot of people here and a good many of us use Apple
products to get our work done.

Even if Apple did agree to restrict the access of UK citizens to
secure, encrypted services, it would have to warn every other person
about that. If a U.S. citizen was using iMessage with a UK citizen the
US user would need to be warned that their chat was not secure, and
could be read by law-enforcement officials. Bear in mind here that no
court order is needed for this as the legislation stands currently,
ministers can sign off on access with no judicial oversight.

Why is the government doing this? Well, it’s the same old chestnut, here’s what David Cameron said Monday on UK show This Morning:
“As prime minister, I would say to people, ‘Please let’s not have a
situation where we give terrorists, criminals, child abductors, safe
spaces to communicate.”

This is, of course, misdirection. Terrorists, criminals and child
abductors will simply encrypt their own data. This is so utterly basic
that if the UK government can’t consider it, I really don’t know what
hope we have. One VPN connection and you’re able to prevent your ISP
from seeing what you do, and thus the government.

You simply can’t stop criminals from building their own systems to
avoid the law. We’ve known this since the Enigma machine in WWII, and
although the systems are more complicated now, they’re also available to
all.

So will Apple stop selling the iPhone in the UK? Well, it strikes me
it’s the most likely option. Giving UK law enforcement free reign to
encrypted services would be incredibly unpalatable to Apple as it would
affect US customers.

What the British people need is large tech companies to speak up now.
We can’t allow technologically ignorant politicians to trample all over
the right of privacy because they haven’t had the internet properly
explained to them. If Apple were to speak with David Cameron and explain
what’s at stake, perhaps that would be enough to reverse this madness.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">If a PC company had flat sales, you might think its CEO would go "phew, not bad when the overall market is declining." Not really though: Lenovo, HP, Dell, Acer and Asus all increased sales this past quarter even though the overall market declined. Apple, too. It's not clear which PC company is suffering, but the strong are getting stronger while the weak are now exiting.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">So flat iPad sales -- in spite of what Tim Cook may say -- is alarming to Apple and Apple watchers. Moreover, now that Apple is selling larger phones, people are realizing that you don't need a big phone and a small tablet. <span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">The iPad may not be one of the weak, but it is not one of the strong either. What should Apple do? The company has two options: 1) make the iPad more appealing to a new market segment, and/or 2) deliver the same proposition to the existing market segment better.

The company is also rumored to have a revamped, 12-inch MacBook Air -- in other words, that the portrayed iPad Pro might have a larger display than the company's most popular laptop says volumes.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Instead, Apple chose to focus on the second strategy: doing the same thing better. The iPad 2, 3 and 4 basically had the same body, so pundits were somewhat surprised to see a noticeably streamlined iPad body for the second year in a row. Perhaps that speaks to the urgency driving Apple with its iPad line.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Apple's strategy with the iPad Air is clear with the sequel -- they want to improve the Air enough to make the iPad mini obsolete (and potentially other competing small tablets in the process). The key to doing that is reducing the iPad Air's weight. A larger tablet does everything better than a mini tablet except portability, and specifically, being able to hold the device in one hand while you read. Large tablets were too heavy for that purpose.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">That may change with the iPad Air 2, which is 18% thinner and 7% lighter than its predecessor.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I considered purchasing the first iPad Air when it launched and while at the store I tested for "one hand holdability while lying down in bed" (don't ask how). It was just a shade too heavy. That will be the test I give the iPad Air 2 again. If it passes, the iPad mini is truly dead and buried.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">The new iPhone 6 Plus was just announced this week with preorders starting early this morning. I placed my own preorder
for a 6 Plus to use on T-Mobile and cannot wait to get my hands on the
device. People have been looking for Apple to launch a large smartphone
and they finally delivered.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">The iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 resolution display,
internal storage capacity up to 128GB, NFC with Apple Pay support,
advanced A8 chip and M8 motion coprocessor, new 8 megapixel iSight
camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), the TouchID button, and
significantly increased battery life. Those on T-Mobile also now get
WiFi Calling and VoLTE support, which were functions we have only seen
on Android in the past. The specs are top notch and with iOS 8 powering
the device we can rest assured performance will be solid.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">There are always a few things missing from every device and I was
hoping to see wireless charging, waterproof capability, and infrared
remote control support. These are niche desires, though, and the iPhone 6
Plus will easily appeal to the masses who might have went with a Note 4
or other large screen Android device if Apple did not go big. Apple
already reports that the initial stock of all iPhone 6 Plus variations
in the US have sold out.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">The iPhone 6 Plus is clearly the most expensive smartphone available
today with full prices ranging from $749 to $949 and two-year contract
subsidized prices ranging from $299 to $499. For those of us who use our
smartphones daily as an essential tool, the cost is justified.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I just posted my full review of the new Moto X
and consider it the best Android smartphone available today. It might
not have some of the niche functions seen in other Android devices, but
the user experience, quick software updates, and core functionality
cannot be beat. It really is like the iPhone of the Android world.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Unfortunately, you cannot yet purchase the new Moto X
and we have not yet been told when it will be released. The price is
right, though, at just $99 with two-year contract and $499 with no
contract. Compare that to the lowest priced iPhone 6 at $649 and you can
quickly see the value in the Moto X.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Motorola offers some fantastic features that provide a better overall
daily usage experience than any other smartphone. I debated about
giving the Moto X the top spot and could easily be convinced to make
that switch, but went with the iPhone since apps always launch on iOS
first.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">The Nokia Lumia 1520
is the best Windows Phone available today and has just about everything
you could want in a smartphone. This includes the best camera
available, microSD expansion card slot, large high resolution display,
Qi wireless charging, extremely long battery life, and the latest
version of Windows Phone 8.1.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Unfortunately, it is only sold on one US carrier (AT&T)
and at select online retailers so it will not be purchased by the
masses. The app gap continues to shrink with Windows Phone 8.1, but
there are still holes and it is pretty rare to have brand new apps
launch directly on Windows Phone.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Windows Phone 8.1 itself is a satisfying OS with the best personal
assistant in Cortana, a very functional Action Center, nearly perfect
folder implementation on the home screen, and more. I bought the
unlocked 1520.3 and could not be happier with a Windows Phone device.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">The new HTC One (M8)
is a nice upgrade to the M7 in most regards. I keep putting my SIM card
back into it since it is one of the fastest smartphones available
today. The camera is often referred to as the Achilles heel of this
phone, but honestly the photos are just fine for social networks and
sharing photos online with family and friends.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">HTC improved its Sense 6 UI so that it honestly enhances, rather than
detracts from, the Android experience. There is just the right amount
of customizations, settings, and features without being overbearing like
Samsung tends to do. You won’t find a better designed smartphone and
HTC did a fantastic job improving on an already great device.

on Verizon and it has the exact same hardware as the Android version so
if Windows Phone is your preferred OS then look at this device.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Design

The iPhone 6 Plus is accurately an exaggerated version of the iPhone 6 in terms of its physical design, with extent stretched to accommodate its much larger 5.5-inch display. It’s 0.01-inches thicker, just under half-an inch wider, and just under an inch taller than the iPhone 6, and you’ll notice each of those increase in the hand, including the additional thickness, even if it is just a shade of difference. In terms of carrying and holding the device, the additional size makes for a less ‘perfect’ ergonomic quality, something the iPhone 6 absolutely achieves, but there’s still lots to love about the engineering design of the 6 Plus.

Like the iPhone 6, it benefits from rounded edges and smooth surfaces that recall the iPad mini and iPad Air. The curved sides make it easier to page back and forth through content with swipes, and it’s easy to imagine how a design with right angles would’ve resulted in an uncomfortable grip with a device this size. The screen is also the star here, and that 5.5-inch high res beauty is set off by thin side bezels, and top and bottom bezels that appear much smaller since they take up a far smaller entitlement of the overall front surface of the device.

Attention to detail is Apple’s forte, and that’s apparent in the way the volume keys, relocated power button (it’s on the right side now) and lock switch are all machined. Perforations including the speaker holes on the bottom right are similarly well-executed, and overall the sense you get of the iPhone 6 Plus is one of extreme high quality, which is not something that can be said for the rest of the ‘phablet’ field. Apple has managed to make the very first well-designed smartphone of epic scale, regardless of your thoughts on the plus point of the category as a whole.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Performance

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">The iPhone 6 Plus may be powering a much larger display, and it may need to output content at a higher resolution, but it’s not showing any additional strain vs. the iPhone 6 despite the extra spadework required. The 64-bit A8 process that Apple has designed, which uses a new, smaller and more power-efficient 20nm process, is more than up to the task of serving up animations, swipes, switches and multitasking for the 6 Plus.

If you’re new to the world of iOS and iPhone, you’ll most likely just note that the performance is excellent and move on. But if you’re upgrading from an older device, like perhaps the iPhone 4 or 4S, you’re going to instantly take note of just how speedy everything is with this new processor architecture. The screen sizes are stealing headlines, but the performance of the A8, in graphics-intensive applications and in rendering interface additions, means that you’ll be feeling the effects of Apple’s next-generation processor improvements long after people are used to the bigger displays.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
The iPhone 6 Plus, like the iPhone 6, also features faster wireless performance, on both cellular and Wi-Fi connections. The 802.11ac Wi-Fi felt blazingly fast when used on my home network, which is run from a current-generation Airport Extreme that supports the latest Wi-Fi speeds. LTE is now able to handle up to 150 mbps connections, where supported (and with 20 bands supported on a single model number, you’re more likely to find it works with carriers around the world). Apple has also worked with carriers to get LTE roaming working with more international carrier arrangements, and I found that my AT&T testing sim provided a strong Rogers LTE connection here in Canada.

Features

Apple has brought a number of great new features to both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, including Apple Pay, which works as advertised in demos but will launch publicly in October in the U.S., and ‘Focus Pixels’ phase discovery autofocus for faster, better picture taking. But there are a few featues that are specific to the iPhone 6 Plus that make it a device destined to appeal to both power users and everyday customers looking to simplify their life with a single gadget, instead of requiring both a tablet and phone (and even a computer).

Reach ability is the feature Apple created to help users deal with much larger devices, in spite of the size of their hands and digits. The iPhone 6 Plus leans on this especially, as it’s impossible for anyone not in the NBA to reach their thumb across to the top opposite corner. I find it difficult to even reach across the other side of the screen, let alone the corner, when one-handing the device. Reach ability helps reach the stuff that’s in the top row, but it doesn’t bring down the status bar on the Home screen (it does in app), which would be helpful, and it’s still a stretch to reach the relocated opposite corner.

For the majority tasks, I find the iPhone 6 Plus to be a two-handed device – but I also find that I’m absolutely fine with that. The 6 Plus is closer in usage style to an iPad mini, in my experience, albeit one that’s pocket able and capable of full cellular voice communications. Part of the reason that it works so well as a tablet-style gadget is that Apple has introduced special landscape support for both the home screen and some its first-party apps, which really add to my capability to be productive using them.

The apps in question include Mail, Messages and Calendar, and these now offer up overviews in a column on the left, and detail views on the right, much like they do on tablet or desktop devices. In Mail, it lets you quickly scroll through and triage your email without having to constantly swipe back and forth, and in Messages, it lets you keep abreast of the latest goings on in multiple conversations at once. Using these landscape views successfully almost requires two-handed use, but it ends up feeling well worth the trade-off.

Apple has also introduced new optical image stabilization for still pictures to the iPhone 6 Plus, and the effects are very remarkable.
